Yehiel Curry, New ELCA Presiding Bishop, Joins Portico Board as Advisory Member

Portico Benefit Services, the benefits ministry of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA), announced today that the Rev. Yehiel Curry, presiding bishop of the ELCA, has been appointed as an advisory member of Portico’s board of trustees.

Curry, who was installed as presiding bishop on Oct. 4, brings to his advisory role both visionary leadership and a deep commitment to collaborative ministry. His appointment underscores the vital connection between Portico’s mission and the broader health and sustainability of the ELCA’s shared ministry.

“Portico’s work extends far beyond benefits administration — it is foundational to the sustainability and vitality of our church,” said Curry. “When we ensure that our rostered ministers, lay employees and their families have access to comprehensive benefits and financial wellness resources, we’re investing in the strength of congregations and ministries across the ELCA.

“Through this important work,” Curry continued, “Portico serves as a strategic partner in our shared mission, and I look forward to working alongside the board to ensure we’re evolving the church to adapt, grow and thrive for generations to come.”

As an advisory member, Curry will provide guidance on strategic priorities, helping to align Portico’s work with the evolving needs of the ELCA and its commitment to “a connected church” — a central theme of his leadership vision.

“Bishop Curry’s presence on our board is both an honor and a powerful affirmation of the ministry we carry out together,” said Portico President and CEO Chris Johnson.

“His leadership comes at a crucial time as we work to strengthen the ELCA,” Johnson continued. “Portico has built a position of strength through disciplined stewardship and our enduring commitment to our mission, and with Bishop Curry’s guidance, we can leverage that strength to ensure long-term sustainability across our denomination.”

Portico serves more than 55,000 members across the ELCA and its partner organizations, providing retirement, health and other benefits that enable church leaders to focus on their callings. The organization’s board governance includes advisory members who bring specialized expertise and denominational perspective to strategic planning and oversight.

Curry served as bishop of the ELCA Metropolitan Chicago Synod from 2019 until his election as presiding bishop in July, and as mission developer and pastor of Shekinah Chapel in Riverdale, Ill.. He earned a Bachelor of Arts from Lewis University in Romeoville, Ill., and a Master of Divinity from the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago (LSTC).

Also serving as advisory members to Portico’s board of trustees are Lori Fedyk, ELCA treasurer, and the Rev. Regina Hassanally, bishop of the ELCA Southeastern Minnesota Synod.
