Christopher (Chris) Johnson has been named the next President and CEO of Portico Benefit Services. He will join Portico on Oct. 7.
“Chris embodies our values, shares our commitment to serving faith-based organizations, and sees significant opportunities for the future. His proven track record, innovative approach, and strategic vision will serve him well guiding Portico into the future with the evolving ELCA,” said Lori Lewis, Chair of Portico’s Board of Trustees.
In addition to his leadership experience, Lewis said, Chris is dedicated to enhancing Portico’s capabilities, exploring new opportunities, and moving forward with the strategic goals of the organization. “Chris will introduce fresh perspectives and diversify Portico in a way that honors the past while meeting the needs of members and sponsoring organizations in the future,” she added.
Chris brings a proven 30-year track record of scaling businesses for growth, along with extensive leadership experience, an innovative approach, and strong connection to the church, making him uniquely qualified to advance Portico’s vision for the future.
- Chris grew up in the Twin Cities, attending Mount Olivet Lutheran Church in Minneapolis.
- His leadership background includes executive positions in health care with UnitedHealth Group and with Elevance Health, and also in the financial services sector with U.S. Bancorp and American Express.
- He has an MBA from the Carlson School of Management at the University of Minnesota.
- Currently, he is a member of Luther Seminary’s Faith+Lead Innovation Advisory Council. Previously, he served on the national Board of the Evangelical Lutheran Good Samaritan Society.
- He resides in Stillwater, MN, and attends Trinity Lutheran Church. He and his wife, Marilyn, have three children: Christopher, Emily, and David.

In addition to welcoming Chris, Lewis also expressed her gratitude to Interim President and CEO Stacy Kruse on behalf of Portico’s Board. “We want to sincerely thank Stacy for guiding the organization through this period of transition,” the Board Chair said.
“We appreciate Stacy’s leadership and the continuity she has provided,” she added. “Building on her extensive experience and deep organizational knowledge, Stacy will resume her full-time focus as Chief Operating and Financial Officer, working closely with Chris and the Leadership Council. We look forward to this next chapter for Portico.”
