Giving Thanks in All Seasons

Enter his gates with thanksgiving
and his courts with praise; give thanks to him
and praise his name. For the Lord is good and
his love endures forever; his faithfulness continues
through all generations.

(Psalm 100:4-5)

November is a time to pause and share our gratitude for the harvest as the season of growth bids us farewell. As the leaves change and living things prepare for a season of hibernation, we are reminded of God’s artistic nature and the beauty of letting go.

The transformation from abundance to scarcity in nature is profound. But in our own lives, it can be difficult to give thanks when we experience loss or the disappearance of familiar ways. Through the lens of scarcity, we narrow our ability to see beyond fear. Too often, we dismiss, disrespect, and exhibit unkindness toward each other. We lose our willingness to listen, be faithful, and trust — jumping to conclusions without seeking to understand.

The psalmist reminds us to enter God’s gates with thanksgiving, inviting us to a mindset of abundance, regardless of the current happenings in our lives. Abundance invites us to build up our neighbor and give thanks for them, whether next door, within our community, or across an ocean.

In this season of Thanksgiving let us open our hearts and minds to God’s abundance, life, and light! Even when we experience scarcity, may we look for the opportunities to see God in each other, remember our interconnectivity as the body of Christ, and give God our thanks and praise!
